Liberty Village Opens Safe Cycling Routes for Families, Beginners
Designated paths through local parks give new riders and parents with children protected options away from busy traffic.

Liberty Village marked three family cycling routes on July 1 that run through Garrison Common and along the east side of the waterfront trail.
City staff added painted lanes and signage after residents raised concerns about traffic speeds on Atlantic Avenue and nearby streets during evening rush hours. The routes connect directly to the Liberty Village Active Living program, which runs free monthly bike safety workshops at the community centre on King Street West.
Key local spots for new riders
The Garrison Common loop covers 2.8 kilometres of flat path bordered by open grass and playgrounds. It links to a shorter 1.4-kilometre spur that follows the old rail corridor behind the Liberty Market building. Both sections stay closed to motor vehicles on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. under the current pilot.
The waterfront trail section starts at the foot of Strachan Avenue and runs north to the footbridge near the Bentall Centre. Riders pass the fenced dog park and the seasonal pop-up bike repair stand operated by Cycle Toronto volunteers every Saturday morning.
Numbers and next steps
A 2025 city survey recorded a 28 percent rise in family cycling permits issued through the Liberty Village Active Living program compared with 2024. Helmet rentals at the community centre cost five dollars for the day, and the next beginner group ride is scheduled for July 18 at 10 a.m.
Families can pick up printed maps at the Liberty Village library branch or download the route file from the city website before heading out. Riders are asked to yield at all crosswalks and stay to the right on the marked lanes.
