Nature Walks Downtown Core Locals Love
Discover hidden walking trails in Downtown Core that locals use daily. Skip the crowded boardwalk and explore unmarked paths with elevation changes and waterfront views.
How we reported this

Locals in Downtown Core have shifted their morning and evening routines to the unmarked path that runs behind the decommissioned power station on Harbour Lane.
The route gained steady use after the Downtown Parks Department opened limited access gates in spring 2024, giving residents a direct link from the East End residential blocks to the waterfront without crossing the tourist-heavy boardwalk. Wellness programmes run by the Core Active Living Network now schedule group walks here twice weekly, drawing participants who want elevation changes and shade from the old rail embankment.
Two overlooked routes in the Core
One loop begins at the rear entrance of Elmwood Park on Maple Street and follows a narrow service road that locals call the Quarry Cut. It climbs 40 metres over 1.2 kilometres before dropping into a stand of maples that screens the city skyline. A second path starts at the disused loading dock behind the old freight terminal on Station Road and traces the edge of the former canal basin for 800 metres before rejoining the street grid near the 12th Avenue underpass. Both routes stay within three blocks of regular bus stops yet see almost no foot traffic from out-of-town visitors.
The Core Active Living Network reported 2,180 registered participants in its outdoor programmes during the first half of 2026, up from 1,470 in the same period of 2025. Entry to the trails remains free, though the network charges $8 for optional printed maps sold at its office on 7th Street.
How to reach the trails this weekend
Residents recommend starting before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to avoid any residual delivery traffic on the service roads. The Quarry Cut path has two benches installed last autumn by the parks department, while the canal-basin route passes a drinking fountain maintained by the same crew. Anyone new to the area can pick up the latest access updates at the network office or check the posted notices at the Maple Street park gate. Downtown Core residents continue to treat these walks as part of regular fitness habits rather than weekend sightseeing.
