Downtown Core Parks Updates Ratings for 5 Local Walking Trails
Downtown Core parks department has updated ratings for five local trails based on measured distances and terrain challenges.
How we reported this

Downtown Core's parks department released updated ratings this week for five local trails, listing distances from 1.8 kilometers to 7.4 kilometers alongside difficulty grades from flat pavement to steep inclines with elevation gains over 150 meters.
Summer schedules have pushed more residents outdoors after indoor fitness centers reported wait times exceeding 40 minutes during peak evening hours last month. The City Parks Department noted that trail maintenance crews completed resurfacing work on three paths in late June, removing loose gravel that previously caused slips on the steeper sections near the river.
Shorter Routes Close to Transit
The 1.8-kilometer loop inside Maple Grove Park starts at the entrance on King Street and stays under 20 meters of elevation change, making it suitable for daily commuters who exit the subway at Union Station. A second option, the 3.1-kilometer path along the old rail corridor in the Arts Quarter, passes the Downtown Wellness Collective building at 245 Queen Street where staff post daily step counts on a public board. Both routes connect directly to bus stops on Elm Street, allowing walkers to combine exercise with errands without driving.
Longer Options with Elevation
Walkers seeking more distance can head to the 5.6-kilometer Riverbend Trail that begins at Harbourfront Plaza and climbs the bluffs behind the old warehouse district. The route includes two sets of wooden stairs added by the parks crew in April 2025. The longest marked option, the 7.4-kilometer Hilltop Circuit, starts at the north end of Victoria Park and records 180 meters of total ascent according to the department's GPS data collected in May. No entry fees apply to any of these trails, though parking at the Victoria Park lot costs $4 for two hours.
June visitor logs from the parks department show a 28 percent rise in daily trail counts compared with the same period in 2025. The increase aligns with the launch of the Downtown Core Walking Challenge, a free program that logs participation through an app and awards certificates after 50 kilometers completed.
Residents planning a visit should check the City Parks Department website for any temporary closures due to recent rain and carry water, especially on the longer routes that lack shade for stretches longer than 800 meters. Trail maps are available at the information kiosk inside Maple Grove Park and at the front desk of the Downtown Wellness Collective.
