High Park Secures Funding for Trail and Nature Centre Upgrades

Canada and Ontario have announced funding for recreational trail rehabilitation and Nature Centre upgrades at Toronto's High Park, including eliminated curbs, new seating, and improved drainage.

The investment focuses on trail rehabilitation and upgrades at the Nature Centre. These changes address accessibility and drainage across paths used by local residents for recreation. High Park spans 161 hectares and serves as a central venue for sports in the city.

Current Sports Facilities in High Park

High Park features sports fields along with a hockey rink, an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and baseball diamonds. It offers six public tennis courts, three baseball diamonds and two soccer fields. The tennis courts convert to a rink for seasonal ice skating in winter, providing year-round options on the same surfaces.

These venues support multiple sports without requiring additional land. The 161-hectare site includes dedicated spaces for baseball, soccer and tennis alongside the other amenities.

Impact on Local Access and Use

Trail rehabilitation and Nature Centre work will improve drainage and add seating along routes connecting the sports areas. Eliminating curbs enhances movement between fields and courts for participants and spectators. The upgrades build on the existing layout of six tennis courts, three baseball diamonds and two soccer fields.

High Park's scale allows these facilities to operate together in one location. The combination of summer sports and winter ice skating on the tennis courts maximises the use of the 161 hectares throughout the year.

Further improvements to drainage and seating will support ongoing use of the hockey rink, outdoor swimming pool and baseball diamonds. The announced funding from Canada and Ontario targets these practical enhancements to the recreational network.
